GCSE Coursework Project 2: Database

Your next coursework project will involve the construction and use of a database of about 30-40 records.

VERY IMPORTANT…the database must have a purpose.  It has to provide a solution to a real-world problem or set of problems.

Examples…

·          a patient database for a dentist, to remind them of appointments

·          a newspaper delivery database for a newsagent, which can produce delivery lists

·          a customer enquiry database for a musical instrument shop.

·          a database of houses currently registered with an estate agent

Some possible project ideas: :

Video or DVD rental catalogue

Social or sports club membership

Nursery clients

Newsagent delivery data

Skateboard shop

Hair dresser customer file

Second hand cars

Dentist patient database

Vet client database

Restaurant guide

Mail order business

Travel agent data

Builder client database

Property from an estate agent

Musical instrument shop

Milk round

Stables: horses database

Tourist attractions

Beauty salon

Optician: clients or product range

To get started, choose one of these or any other topic which interests you and for which you can realistically obtain data.  If you know someone who needs one, so much the better!  Then start thinking about the following questions….

·         Who has the need/problem?

·         What tasks do they perform that use data, and what results do they want to get from the database which can help them?

·         What data will you need to collect, and how easy will this be to collect?

·         What searches and sorts will you do to obtain the data the user needs?

FIRST STEP:   study the file called “DATABASICS” for a reminder of terms and concepts

SECOND STEP:  follow the tutorial exercise for the database software you intend to use

On the school website, intranet and SWGFL Portal you will find useful links and guidance sheets, plus tutorials for both pieces of database software for which we have licences in school.  These are:  Flexidata (all rooms)  and  Microsoft Access (W7 only)

THIRD STEP:  Choose a topic from or similar to the suggestions above.  Complete the planning sheet (DatabasePlanner.doc) and hand it into your teacher, who will make suggestions and make sure you start off on the right track.

NEXT : The project….  Start your project by following the flowchart overpage.

WHAT YOUR FINISHED PROJECT WILL LOOK LIKE:

As before, you will need to write up your project report in five sections:

1. Identify (5)   2. Analyse (9)   3. Design (9)   4. Implement (12)   5. Evaluate (5)

You will need to use screen shots and annotation to show the development of your work.

Printouts of data, sort /search results, charts and reports can be included as evidence

A template is available to help you write up the project, called

Databasetemplate.doc  or you can use  Easierdatabasetemplate.doc
